A good place to open the Bible

Start with a passage, not a reading target.

The Bible is a collection of books: stories, poetry, letters, wisdom, and more. It is normal to find some parts easier to follow than others. You do not have to start at the first page and read straight through.

If you are new to it, try the Gospel of Mark. Its short chapters follow the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Read a small section at a time. The seven-day plan on this site is another gentle starting point.

Ask three questions as you read: What is happening? What do I notice about God or the people in the passage? What would I like to understand better? Write down a question rather than feeling you have to solve it immediately.

Look at the paragraphs before and after a verse. Who is speaking, and to whom? A line of poetry, a story, and an instruction in a letter are not all doing the same job.

Read with others when you can. A local church, a trusted friend, or a study group can help you hear what you might miss on your own. Being puzzled is not a failure to read faithfully.
